Madhukar Kaloji, a renowned sleep disorder specialist from Virginia, the U.S., said sleep deprivation was emerging as one of the prominent causes of physical and mental stress among an increasing number of patients around the globe.

Dr. Kaloji was here at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) on Friday (February 27) to deliver a special lecture on ‘clinical consequences of insomnia, sleep deprivation and sleep problems in patients with pulmonary disorders’ under the ‘Srivari Vaidya Seva’, a TTD’s scheme meant to rope in medical professionals to render their voluntary service during their visit to Tirumala.

A quality sleep of 6-8 hours per day is essential for every human being and its absence will leave serious side effects on their physical and mental health, he observed.

Turning to pulmonary disorders, Dr. Kaloji said those having lung related disorders would have a tough time in getting quality sleep due to frequent coughs or the inherent feeling of breathlessness, and advised such persons to consult a physician to get their issue addressed.

SVIMS head of medicine department Alladi Mohan felicitated Dr. Kaloji on the occasion.
