A 51-year-old Sub-Inspector attached to Natrampalli police near Jolarpet town in Tirupattur was suspended on Saturday for reportedly demanding and taking a bribe of ₹5,000 from a suspect in a road accident case to release his two-wheeler.

The suspended SI has been identified as K. Subramani, who has been working at the police station for the past few years. The Superintendent of Police (SP), V. Shyamala Devi, issued the suspension order based on an inquiry report.

Initial inquiry revealed that the victim, K. Chiranjeevi (24), a resident of Jolarpet town, was riding his two-wheeler near Natrampalli town when he accidently hit another biker on the stretch. The biker was badly injured and later succumbed to injuries at Government Taluk Hospital in Natrampalli.

Subsequently, Natrampalli police registered a case against Chiranjeevi and seized the two-wheeler that was involved in the accident. Chiranjeevi managed to get a local court order to get his two-wheeler back.

Police said Chiranjeevi gave a copy of the court order to the suspended sub-inspector to allow him to take his two-wheeler. However, sub-inspector Subramani has reportedly demanded ₹15,000 to release the two-wheeler. Chiranjeevi told police that as an advance, he paid ₹10,000 to the sub-inspector, who insisted on paying the remaining amount to get his two-wheeler back.

Chiranjeevi managed to arrange the remaining amount ₹5,000 and gave it to the sub-inspector. A video of the incident was shot and went viral in social media platforms, leading to a public outcry.

Following the incident, the SP ordered an inquiry and later suspended the sub-inspector. A probe is underway.
