Operation and maintenance of street lights in the city has been hit due to shortage of workers and technicians. Complaints of dysfunctional street lights continue to be reported in several areas including Ponmalaipatti, Melakalkandarkottai, Keelakalkandarkottai and Thiruvanaikoil. While a section of residents come up with the issue of poorly lit street lights, there are complaints that authorities take a long time to rectify the problems or change the dysfunctional lights. Residents say it has raised safety concerns to passengers, particularly women and elders.
