A day after the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) unveiled a martyr’s column at Government Law College, Barton Hill, in memory of former college union chairperson M.A. Sakeer here which led to clashes between the SFI and the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), a remembrance meeting organised by the SFI at the college on Saturday (January 17, 2025) passed off without any untoward incidents.

SFI district secretary M.A. Nandan said the union would approach the court since there was nothing preventing a memorial from coming up in connection with the upcoming 150th anniversary of the college. The memorial was erected as per students’ wishes in association with the alumni association.

The KSU blamed the SFI for Friday’s clashes, pointing out that it had obtained a stay on the alleged illegal construction of the martyr’s column. A stop memo had been issued earlier by the college and four SFI activists were suspended. Despite a stay order issued by the High Court, the SFI had unveiled the memorial and posted this on social media on Friday itself. The KSU said it was firm on the demand for demolition of the memorial.
