Traders of the central vegetable market near Mattuthavani complain about an incessant overflow of sewage water into the market area causing a constant fear of flu spread and pollution. Central Market Federation president N. Chinnamayan said the problem started when water from the newly constructed Mullaperiyar combined drinking water scheme tank near the market started overflowing due to lack of maintenance. “Without proper drainage facilities, the surplus water entered nearby underground sewers, mixed with sewage, and eventually backed up into the market complex,” he added.
