Roadside dumping hot spots in Coimbatore city are planned to be turned into planted and maintained green spaces as part of the efforts by Coimbatore Corporation to address waste accumulation and need for improving public areas.

Private and voluntary organisations have expressed interest in supporting the initiative through CSR funds, and discussions with the Corporation are ongoing.

According to the Corporation officials, the project will convert open public spaces where waste is frequently dumped into landscaped areas with grass and plants, limited to locations where space allows and roads will not be narrowed. Around 20 hot spots in Ward 80 have been identified, with work expected to begin once the plan is finalised.

Officials said that even though several measures have been introduced, some members of the public continue to dump waste at roadside locations. Measures such as surveillance cameras installed at over 400 locations, fines imposed on violators, and green nets have helped reduce roadside dumping. Wall-painting initiatives have also been carried out at sites where dumping is common, and garbage bins have been removed across the city to support a bin-free approach.

Based on the outcome of the new initiative, the project may be implemented in other parts of the city, officials added.
