Residents of the eastern hill region in Bargur have urged the authorities to immediately resume and expedite the stalled road development works between Thamaraikarai and Elachipalayam.

According to residents, the department had taken up the formation of a 17-km stretch from Thamaraikarai to Madam to improve connectivity in the hilly terrain. As part of the project, a tar road has been laid from Madam to Elachipalayam. From Elachipalayam to Thamaraikarai, a metal road was formed to facilitate vehicular movement.

However, the works have been suspended for the past one-and-a-half months, causing inconvenience to the public. With buses operating on the partially completed stretch, excessive dust has become a major issue, severely affecting passengers, pedestrians and roadside residents. Students commuting to schools and colleges are among the worst affected, locals said.

Two-wheeler riders, including teachers and daily wage earners, frequently face tyre puncture due to the unfinished surface and loose stones scattered along the road. This has led to delays in reaching workplaces and educational institutions, they added.

Stating that the road is a vital link for several hill villages, the residents appealed to the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to resume the pending works and complete the project at the earliest to ensure safe and smooth transportation.
