Southern Railway has begun constructing walls on both the sides of manned railway level crossing at Mahakalipadpu after the newly built railway underpass nearby was opened for traffic recently. It is to close the level crossing permanently.

Construction of walls started a day after district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated the twin RuBs on January 25.

On January 26, the railways dug up trenches in front of the gates at the level crossing. Now, walls are being raised on the two sides. Railings have been placed at a distance from the gates to prevent people from crossing the railway track. Railway officials said once the construction work is completed, orders will be issued to permanently close the manned level-crossing.

Meanwhile, residents of Mahakalipadpu said that with permanent closure of the level crossing, they will be practically cut off from getting direct access for cars, ambulances and other utility vehicles from Morgan’s Gate to their area, in case of flooding at the underpass. Local resident Rajagopal said a request has been made to the railways to widen a nearby underbridge, near the level crossing, which will facilitate movement of two-wheelers and other small vehicles to Morgan’s Gate.
