Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao sparked a fresh political controversy by stating that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ‘should be hanged’ for what he described as false promises made to unemployed youth.

Mr. Rama Rao’s response was to earlier remarks by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who had said that former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao would have been ‘hanged in any other country’ for allegedly damaging Telangana’s interests in river water sharing and for making money illeglly through irrigation projects.

Addressing a gathering attended by legislators and senior BRS leaders on Sunday, Mr. Rama Rao said the Congress itself ‘must be hanged umpteen times’ for what he termed historic injustices against Telangana. He alleged that Congress was responsible for the merger of Telangana with Andhra Pradesh despite the recommendations of the Fazal Ali Commission, the first States Reorganisation Committee.

The BRS leader further accused successive Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) governments in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh of systematically discriminating against Telangana since 1956 in the allocation of river waters, budgetary funds and government jobs.

Mr. Rama Rao also alleged that Congress governments had demolished check dams and barrages to serve their political interests, harming the region’s water security. He said such actions had caused long-term damage to Telangana’s development prospects.
