Independent MLA P. Angalane representing Thirubhuvanai constituency, along with Vignesh Kannan, son of former veteran politician, the late P. Kannan, have joined the DMK.

A press release from the DMK said the two were inducted into the party in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the party headquarters, the Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai.

Senior DMK leaders, including Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, Duraimurugan, S. Jagathrakshakan, MP and R. S. Bharathi, besides Puducherry DMK convenor R. Siva were present on the occasion.

Mr. Angalane was previously with the Congress and had even served in 2006 as Social Welfare Minister for six months during the Congress regime. He was stripped of the post following a complaint by his wife who accused him of domestic violence.

When incumbent Chief Minister N. Rangasamy broke ranks with the Congress and formed the All India NR Congress in 2011, he joined the party and was given the post of secretary. He won the Thirubhuvanai seat on an AINRC ticket in the Assembly elections that year.

In 2016, he resigned from the AINRC. In the 2021 elections, he contested as an Independent and emerged victorious in the Thirubhuvanai (reserved) constituency. As an Independent, he extended support to the NDA government.

He is expected to stake a claim to contest from Thirubhuvanai on a DMK ticket this time.

Vignesh Kannan is also expecting to make an electoral debut in the upcoming elections.
