The public who invested money in a jewellery shop protested on Saturday (January 31, 2026) after the shop did not return their investments. A jewellery shop functioning in the locality of Salem Town collected a monthly chit amount from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 and also received deposits from the public by assuring to provide a higher interest. Believing this, hundreds of people invested their money at the shop but it has not returned the amount as promised for the past six months, which the shop assured to return on Saturday. But, over 50 people came to the shop and found it to be closed. Shocked by this, they went to the house of the jewellery shop owner, Shanmugam, but nearby residents alleged that he had shifted his house. Later, the depositors gathered before the shop and protested. The town police are investigating further.
