Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao has directed all five corporation Commissioners to draw up a short-term flood mitigation plan outlining works that can be completed within the next four months to minimise flood impact during the monsoon.

Mr. Rao asked officials concerned to place nature-based and eco-friendly principles at the core of all developmental activities and stressed that environmentally sensitive development and effective flood mitigation must be prioritised.

The Chief Commissioner has also asked officers to coordinate with the Tourism Department to develop lakes as public attractions while preserving their ecosystem. He made it clear that diesel or fuel-based boats would not be permitted in any lake, and that only non-polluting alternatives would be introduced. The boating systems must ensure zero pollution and minimal disturbance to aquatic life, he said.

Mr. Rao directed officials to examine the feasibility of introducing ducks in lakes, noting that ducks function as natural aerators and can contribute to improving water quality. He added that the responsibility for duck rearing and maintenance should be entrusted through a tendering process to ensure accountability and legal compliance.
