Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Deshmukh Shekhar Sanjay visited the check-posts on the periphery of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai on Thursday to monitor the vehicle checking to curb the movement of unaccounted cash, liquor, gifts etc. which could be used to entice the voters.

During informal chat with the reporters, Mr. Deshmukh Shekhar said unaccounted cash above ₹50,000 and the valuable articles and gifts being transported without proper documents would be seized. Hence, those who carry high value cash and gold and silver ornaments and gift articles in large number should produce proper documents.

While the entire Palayamkottai Assembly constituency falls under the City Police Commissionerate, more than 50% of the Tirunelveli segment and nine polling booths of Nanguneri constituency were being monitored by the City Police. Apart from 18 flying and the static squads deployed in Tirunelveli and the Palayamkottai segments round-the-clock, the police would also conduct surprise checks at vantage points.

Seven check-posts had been created on the borders of the City Police Commissionerate to monitor the movement of criminals, unaccounted cash, gifts, liquor, narcotic substances etc. Moreover, random surprise checks would also be conducted within the city.

“So far, ₹2.40 lakh has been seized as the possessors failed to account for the money,” he said.

Cars, buses and container lorries were checked during the inspection by the Commissioner of Police.
