The district police late on Tuesday night (February 17, 2026) issued a clarification stating that only 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen, and not 100 sovereigns as initially reported.

In a release, the police said the theft occurred at the residence of Rajan in Karungalpalayam on Tuesday. Unidentified persons allegedly entered the house using a key, broke open a locker and decamped with gold jewellery kept in a bureau. On receiving information, senior police officials rushed to the spot and conducted inquiries.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Rajan’s wife, Nirmaladevi, a private school teacher in Erode, had left for work as usual. Their son, Jayakrishna, reportedly locked the house around 3 p.m., hid the key near the entrance and left for tuition classes. When Nirmaladevi returned home later and entered the house, she found the locker broken and the jewellery missing, following which she lodged a complaint with the police.

Police said about 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery had been kept in the bureau at the time of the incident. The family also informed the police that 37 sovereigns had already been pledged at a bank for family expenses. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
