Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (February 13, 2026) spoke to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman and congratulated him on the BNP’s election victory. He said the Indian government is committed to “the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples”.

After 20 years, the BNP is set to stake claim to form the government in Bangladesh. It won more than 200 seats in the Bangladesh general elections.

Mr. Rahman, the son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is poised to become the country’s Prime Minister. He won from Dhaka-17, and Bogura-6, a BNP stronghold.

“Delighted to speak with Mr. Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections. I conveyed my best wishes and support in his endeavour to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh. As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples,” Mr. Modi wrote on X.

Mr. Rahman faces immediate challenges in restoring political stability, reviving investor confidence and rebuilding key industries – including the garment sector – after prolonged turmoil that followed the collapse of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024.

An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been in charge since then.
