Amid a tussle between the Tamil Nadu Government and Governor R.N. Ravi in appointing the Vice-Chancellors (VCs) of State Universities, the Periyar University V-C search committee scrutinised candidates for interview on January 24 at Tamil Nadu Open University in Chennai.

On April 25, 2025, the Tamil Nadu government wide G.O. constituted a search committee to recommend a panel of three names to the government for appointment of the Periyar University Vice-Chancellor. The search committee invited applications for the V-C post on May 10, 2025, and the last date for applying for the post was June 10, 2025. Later, the government extended the time to the search committee up to March 21, 2026, to recommend a panel of three names for the V-C post.

Meanwhile, the committee scrutinised candidates and called for an interview on January 24 to select three candidates. The interview will be held at the Syndicate Hall of Tamil Nadu Open University in Chennai. A letter was sent to candidates on January 6 by Ra. Ramesh, Nodal Officer of Periyar University Search Committee.

Higher Education Department secretary P. Shankar said that he did not know about this and it does not come under his purview. “The V-C search committee will do it independently,” he added.
