Perinjanam’s ‘Solar Gramam’ model, a community-driven rooftop solar adoption programme from the State, has received national attention at the Mumbai Climate Week 2026. At a special session titled ‘Panchayats leading India’s Climate Charge’ at the Jio World Convention Centre recently, former panchayat president Sachith K.K. presented Perinjanam’s Solar Gramam model. Mr. Sachith joined grama panchayat representatives from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, who showcased how village institutions are shaping locally grounded climate solutions. The session stressed on the importance of strengthening local leadership in climate action. Mr. Sachith described how the solar transition in Perinjanam began not with crisis, but with community dialogue. The programme was started with a belief that development must not disturb nature’s balance. An awareness programme on alternative energy helped people understand that solar power was not just about technology, but about collective responsibility, he said. Despite initial scepticism, the panchayat built trust through transparent planning and local participation. After eight years of sustained effort, 850 households in Perinjanam have become rooftop solar prosumers, reducing electricity bills by up to 80% while cutting emissions at scale, he noted. The initiative has received national recognition, including the Akshaya Oorja Award.
