Both Houses of Parliament are scheduled to begin discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27 on Monday (February 9, 2026), which was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.

In the previous week, Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks by a voice vote, without Prime Minister’s customary reply, amid vociferous protests by the Opposition over the Indo-U.S. trade deal as well as the Chair “not allowing” Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to make his speech. Speaker Om Birla said on Thursday (February 5, 2026) that he had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the Lower House to deliver his response to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address since he had “concrete information” that many Congress MPs could carry out an “unexpected act” of protest at the PM’s seat.

Opposition MPs are likely to demand a discussion on the framework of the Trade Agreement between India and the United States. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc floor leaders are scheduled to meet ahead of today’s Parliament sitting at the residence of Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. In the meeting, they will discuss and decide on the future course of action for the ongoing Budget Session.
