Over 750 wheelchairs have been kept ready across polling centres in Thoothukudi district for the convenience of differently abled voters, senior citizens and individuals requiring wheelchair accessibility.

Preparatory works for the upcoming Assembly elections are being carried out intensively across all six constituencies of Thoothukudi, Srivaikuntam, Tiruchendur, Vilathikulam, Ottapidaram and Kovilpatti in the district. Collector and District Election Officer K. Elambahavath has been continuously inspecting polling stations to ensure the availability of basic amenities and safe environment for voters.

The district has 1,864 polling stations set up across 980 polling centres. Wheelchair facilities have been arranged at polling stations to assist differently abled voters, elderly persons, and those with mobility issues.

Speaking to The Hindu an official from the Differently Abled Welfare Department said that most polling stations in the district had ramp facilities and arrangements had been made for those using wheelchairs.
