The Salem District Cyber Crime police, in 2025, arrested a total of 36 persons for cyber fraud.

The number of cases related to cyber crime is increasing every year in the district. Even though the police are conducting awareness programmes and issuing caution regarding advertisements, the number of people cheated by online fraudsters continues to increase every year.

In 2025, the Salem District Cyber Crime police received a total of 3,242 complaints regarding cyber fraud (financial and non-financial complaints), which is twice the complaints received in 2024 (1,882 complaints).

The First Information Report (FIR) was registered in 45 cases and the Community Service Register (CSR) was provided for 3,197 complaints. In 2024, the Cyber Crime police registered 56 FIRs and provided CSR in 1,826 cases. The total amount lost in cyber fraud in 2025 was ₹20 crore, which is ₹7.20 crore more than the amount lost in 2024, (₹12.80 crore).

In 2025, through various actions, the Cyber Crime Police recovered ₹1.40 crore and froze ₹6.20 crore. In 2024, the police recovered ₹1.01 crore and froze ₹10.20 crore.

In addition to this, in 2025, the police arrested 36 persons related to cyber frauds. Around 747 lost mobile phones were also recovered.

Officials attached to the Cyber Crime Police said that most of the complaints in 2025 were related to job fraud and assuring to provide more interest for investment. In most of these cases, the victims were highly educated. In 2025, the police also conducted 60 awareness programmes in schools and colleges. Officials added that if people lost their money due to cyber fraud, they should lodge a complaint immediately, which will help in freezing the money or deleting the morphed pictures on the internet.
