The Malkajgiri Traffic Police conducted a weekend special drive against drunk driving, during which 242 motorists caught for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police said the majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, accounting for 211 cases. This was followed by 13 three-wheelers, 17 four-wheelers and one heavy vehicle.

Police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. Officials said that if a person driving in an inebriated condition causes a fatal accident, the individual will be booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which carries a maximum punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.

During the previous week from February 16 to February 22, courts disposed of 61 drunk driving cases. Of these, two offenders were awarded fine and jail terms, one was sentenced to fine and social service, while 58 offenders were imposed fines alone.
