More than 15,500 people with disabilities in Coimbatore district have received welfare assistance worth ₹21.43 crore since May 2021 under various schemes of the Differently-Abled Welfare Department.

The support includes financial aid, mobility devices, educational allowances and livelihood-related equipment.

According to district administration, 121 beneficiaries received bank loans totalling ₹28.15 lakh under the micro and small enterprise loan subsidy scheme, while 111 beneficiaries were provided ₹45 lakh under the marriage assistance scheme.

Assistive devices distributed include wheelchairs worth ₹5.60 lakh to 80 people, retrofitted petrol scooters costing ₹6.26 crore to 619 beneficiaries, hearing aids valued at ₹20 lakh to 608 people, and talking devices costing ₹1.20 crore to 831 beneficiaries.

Motorised sewing machines worth ₹11.13 lakh were provided to the parents of 170 beneficiaries, battery-operated wheelchairs valued at ₹51.99 lakh to 52 persons, and other assistive devices worth ₹9.18 lakh to 1,034 beneficiaries.

Maintenance allowance, educational assistance and reader allowance totalling ₹12.26 crore were extended to 11,915 beneficiaries.
