Minister for Tourism R. Rajendran on Wednesday (January 14, 2026) distributed laptops to 1,492 students at the Government Arts College in the presence of Salem MP T.M. Selvaganapathy.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister said the State government, under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has been implementing several welfare and education-focused schemes to provide students with global-standard learning opportunities. Initiatives such as Naan MudhalvanUyarvukku PadiPudhumai PennTamil PudhalvanIllam Thedi Kalvi, the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme and the Bicycle Distribution Scheme have benefited the public.

Stating that education and healthcare are the two pillars of development, he noted that substantial allocations to the School Education Department have enabled the effective implementation of flagship schemes. The State has achieved nearly 90% coverage in basic infrastructure, including education and road facilities.

Referring to economic performance, the Minister said Tamil Nadu recorded 11.19% growth rate, as per Union Government rankings, and credited leaders such as Periyar, M. Karunanidhi, and Mr. Stalin for the State’s progress.

He also recalled the launch of the State-level “Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil” scheme, under which 10 lakh laptops are being distributed to college students. In Salem district, 5,609 laptops have been allocated in the first phase. The laptops would enhance digital skills, promote entrepreneurship and support research, he said.
