A total of 1,039 motorists were booked for drunk driving during special enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerates over the weekend on March 6 and 7. All offenders will be produced before the court. The Hyderabad traffic police booked 445 motorists, including 377 two-wheeler riders, 22 three-wheeler drivers and 46 four-wheeler drivers. Based on blood alcohol concentration levels, 100 cases recorded readings between 30 mg and 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, 191 between 51 mg and 100 mg, 84 between 101 mg and 150 mg, 39 between 151 mg and 200 mg, 12 between 201 mg and 250 mg, nine between 251 mg and 300 mg and 10 cases recorded levels exceeding 300 mg per 100 ml. The Cyberabad traffic police booked 273 motorists during similar checks. Of them, 214 were two-wheeler riders, eight were three-wheeler drivers, 49 were four-wheeler drivers and two were driving heavy vehicles. Among the offenders, 234 of them recorded blood alcohol concentration levels between 36 mg and 200 mg per 100 ml of blood, 23 recorded levels between 201 mg and 300 mg and 16 had levels between 301 mg and 550 mg. The Malkajgiri traffic police booked 321 motorists during the weekend enforcement drives. Of all those boked, 249 were two-wheeler riders, 11 three-wheeler drivers, 59 four-wheeler drivers and two heavy vehicle drivers. Based on blood alcohol concentration levels, 284 offenders recorded readings between 36 mg and 200 mg per 100 ml of blood, 26 recorded levels between 201 mg and 300 mg and 11 recorded levels between 301 mg and 550 mg. Police said driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. If a person driving in an inebriated condition causes a fatal accident, they will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine. According to the Malkajigiri police, courts disposed of 228 drunk driving cases in the commissionerate between March 1 and March 7. Of these, five offenders were sentenced to jail along with a fine, 10 were levied fines along with social service, and 213 were fined. In the Cyberabad commissionerate, courts disposed of 132 drunk driving cases between March 2 and March 7, with eight offenders awarded fine and jail, four given fine along with social service and 120 fined.
