The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church on Wednesday came down heavily on the Kerala government’s decision to extend the operating hours of bars in the State, alleging that the move would destroy an entire generation. Biju Oommen, association secretary of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, said people were apprehensive of the move that ‘ensures liquor supply round-the-clock.’ “The government should make it clear if it wants the youth to sleep over in a bar,” Mr. Oommen told reporters. He accused the government of selling off a generation to protect the interests of bar owners in the State. “Is it the only way for you to fill the coffers? Is the interest of bar owners more valued than the tears of the mothers in the State?,” he asked. Govt. order The prominent Church denomination’s scathing attack comes a day after the government issued an order extending the operating hours of bars and beer and wine parlours by two hours. The bars and beer parlours will be able to function from 10 a.m. to midnight, as per the order. In addition, the government has decided to grant permission to FL3 licensed bar hotels having 5-star classification and above to function till 3 a.m., allowing an additional three hours after the permissible closing time, on payment of an annual rental of ₹5 lakh.
