Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday (April 6, 2026) reaffirmed his ‘One Northeast’ mission to build a common political platform for the indigenous communities across the region.

Campaigning for the candidate of the National People’s Party (NPP) contesting the Boko-Chaygaon constituency in south-western Assam, Mr. Sangma said the NPP had been expanding across the northeast gradually.

He said the NPP’s broader objective of having elected representatives across the region was to provide a stronger and unified voice for the northeast at various levels. This objective led to the launch of the One Northeast political platform in November 2025.

He was one of the four architects of this platform. The others are Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma of Tripura, Nagaland’s former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Mmhonlumo Kikon, and Assam-based Dimasa tribal leader Daniel Langthasa, now the NPP’s candidate from Haflong.

“We fielded a candidate from Boko-Chaygaon (bordering Meghalaya) after assessing the constituency’s demographic composition and political landscape. The non-nomination of deserving candidates by some political parties created an opportunity for the NPP,” Mr. Sangma said, urging people across the region to align with the NPP’s vision of regional unity and collective progress.

He underscored the need for communities across the region to be cohesive and face all challenges together.

The NPP had fielded three candidates for the April 9 elections in Assam. One of them, Mohammed Aminul Islam, quit a few days after his nomination from the Mankachar seat was accepted and joined the Congress.

The two candidates remaining are Ganseng B. Sangma (Boko-Chaygaon) and Daniel Langthasa (Haflong).
