Notice on removal of Lok Sabha Speaker to be listed in second leg of Budget session

Shortcomings were found in the notice submitted by Opposition MPs on Tuesday (February 10, 2026) to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Lok Sabha sources said. The notice will be listed after the commencement of the second phase of the Budget Session.

Opposition parties belonging to the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) on Tuesday submitted a notice to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla for allegedly conducting the business of the House in a “blatantly partisan” manner.

The notice referred to four events in February but the year mentioned was incorrectly given as 2025.

The Speaker has directed the Secretariat to have the defective notice corrected and then proceed with it.

Once the revised notice is received, it will be examined promptly as per the rules.

Mr. Birla will not preside over the business of the House until the Opposition’s notice for a motion seeking his removal is disposed of, sources said on Tuesday (February 10), citing “moral grounds” for the decision.

The first phase of the Budget session is under way from January 28 until February 13. After a break, the second phase will take place from March 9 to April 2.
