Five years have gone since the State government came out with a plan to set up a rejuvenated Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Karur, which has a number of dyeing and bleaching units.. However, there has been no headway on the proposal.

Similar to Tiruppur and Erode, Karur has a number of dyeing and bleaching units. To discharge the effluents, the entrepreneurs started eight CETPs by entering into memorandums of understanding (MoU). They were functioning well in Karur until 2010. However, lack of coordination among the members, mounting overhead cost and other reasons led to their closure.
