Ragesh Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the newly constructed buildings of Beypore and Medical College police stations through videoconferencing on Wednesday (March 4, 2026). The projects were completed at a cost of ₹4 crore. Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas and Thottathil Raveendran, MLA, presided over the inaugural events. Senior police officers and people’s representatives were present. The Beypore police station began functioning from a rented building in 1990. Later, it was shifted to another leased building under the Beypore Port in 1999. After two decades, it was again shifted to another rented facility in 2021. The new building with modern facilities was constructed on 22 cents handed over by the Port department, according to a senior officer attached to the station. The new station has a women and child-friendly space and enhanced public service areas, he said. The Medical College police station too was functioning from an old building with limited facilities. It was in 1968 that the station started functioning from a temporary building on the medical college campus. It was later shifted to another building near the medical college in 1975. The proposal for the new building was approved a few years ago considering the increased staff strength and law and order responsibilities. The Chief Minister also launched the construction of the State’s first rural jail at Puthuppanam near Vadakara in Kozhikode. It would be completed at a cost of ₹18 crore. In the first phase, ₹2.35 crore would be spent for the construction of the compound wall and main entrance to the three-storey correctional home with facilities to accommodate 223 prisoners and 150 jail employees.
