Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Friday (February 6, 2026) inaugurated a ₹20-crore advanced operation theatre complex and upgraded emergency care unit at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI) in Puducherry.

With the inauguration of the facility, the IGMCRI has 11 modern operation theatres covering about 28,092 sq. ft. of the hospital complex. The new facility will enhance trauma care, emergency services, and advanced surgical treatment. 

The operation theatre, constructed using own funds of the Union Territory (UT), would further strengthen the tertiary care sector in Puducherry. Local legislator K.S.P. Ramesh and Director of the Medical College C. Udayashankar were present.

Foundation laid for 50-bed block

Mr. Rangasamy also laid the foundation for the construction of a 50-bed critical care block at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute. The hospital block will be built at a cost of around ₹11 crore, with a share incurred by the Union government. 

Development of 750-odd acres

Earlier, speaking at a government event, the Chief Minister announced that a programme would be held on February 22 to lay the foundation for developing 750-odd acres at Sedarapet for industrial purposes. Applications would be invited to start industries at the site. It would provide job opportunities to hundreds of people, the Chief Minister said.
