File | Photo Credit: The Hindu Days after former cricketer-turned-politician and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, was suspended from the party following her controversial remark that the person who gives “a suitcase of ₹500 crore” becomes the Chief Minister, Ms. Sidhu announced her decision to quit the party. Announcing her decision to quit the party on ‘X,’ Ms. Sidhu stated that promising leaders within the organisation are not being heard. She criticised Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, blaming him for “damaging the organisation”. She blamed him of “selling the party for petty gains with an understanding with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).” On December 8, 2025, Ms. Sidhu was suspended from Punjab State Congress Committee without mentioning any reason. “Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu is hereby suspended from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect,” the order stated. Earlier, Ms. Sidhu, a former MLA had said that Navjot Singh Sidhu would return to active politics only if the Congress party declared him as its chief ministerial face in Punjab. Her husband and she had always stood for Punjab and ‘Punjabiyat’, she said, adding, “The one who gives a suitcase of ₹500 crore becomes the Chief Minister.” Soon after her remark, political parties including the AAP and the BJP sought an answer from the Congress party on the pointed allegation.
