RAJESH Members of MUTA (Madurai Kamaraj University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Mother Teresa Women’s University and Alagappa University) along with Association of University Teachers (AUT) staged a demonstration in Thoothukudi on Friday, demanding the release of Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) benefits. The protesting members said that while CAS benefits have been granted to teachers working government colleges, it has been withheld for the past five years for teachers working in government-aided colleges. They added that although Higher Education Minister had assured that the CAS benefits would be included in January month’s salary, no action was taken. They further said that teachers had conducted a 16 day sit-in protest in their respective colleges to release the benefits. Subsequently, it was stated that the amount would be included in the February salary, but no steps have been taken so far. Over 100 assistant professors from seven colleges participated in the protest and raised slogans, urging the government to release the CAS benefits to aided college teachers.
