The mother of the victim in the 2016 Perumbavoor rape and murder case was cremated near Perumbavoor on Tuesday (March 10). She died on Monday (March 9) while undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at the Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital. The funeral was held at a public crematorium in Koovappady. After her daughter’s death, the woman found herself in the middle of several controversies often caused by the undue scrutiny of her life on social media. The woman’s daughter, a 30-year-old law student, was found raped and murdered at her house at Kuruppampady near Perumbavoor on April 28, 2016. Ameerul Islam, a migrant worker from Assam, was arrested 49 days after the incident. Though he was awarded capital punishment by the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court, in a verdict upheld by the Kerala High Court later, the Supreme Court in 2024 stayed the execution of the death sentence.
