In a major redevelopment initiative, the State government and the Ollur Assembly constituency have ushered in a new chapter in the historic MN Laksham Veedu housing scheme by converting old twin houses into single, independent homes. The first key handover under the revamped model will take place at Marathakkara in Ollur on February 13.

Launched in 1972 through the Kerala State Housing Board, the MN Laksham Veedu scheme was designed to provide shelter to the most deserving sections of society who did not own a home. Under the original model, two families were accommodated under a single roof in a twin-house structure. Following a government decision, these ageing and often dilapidated twin units are now being reconstructed into single houses, significantly improving living conditions.

Ollur has become the first Assembly constituency in the State to complete the reconstruction process under this new model. The revamped houses have been built at Marathakkara in Puthur grama panchayat and at Mattampuram in Madakkathara grama panchayat. Each house has been reconstructed at a cost of ₹4 lakh.

Revenue and Housing Minister K. Rajan said the decision was taken after considering the hardships faced by residents living in deteriorating twin houses across the State. The project has been implemented by the Kerala State Housing Board.

The key handover ceremony for the newly rebuilt homes at MN Nagar, Marathakkara, will be held at 2.30 p.m. on February 13. The houses at Mattampuram will be inaugurated on February 19.

The function at Marathakkara will be presided over by Housing Board Chairperson T.V. Balan, with Revenue Minister K. Rajan handing over the keys.
