Stating that a severe water shortage looms in the Perundurai Assembly constituency, Perundurai MLA S. Jayakumar has urged the district administration to take urgent steps to ensure a regular supply of drinking water.

In a petition submitted to the district administration here on Tuesday (February 10, 2026), the MLA stressed the need to regulate drinking water supply in Perundurai Municipality, Karumandichellipalayam Town Panchayat, and the panchayat unions of Perundurai and Chennimalai. He said the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board had identified groundwater sources in six panchayats under the Chennimalai Panchayat Union as unfit for consumption. He called for alternative sources to be utilised to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply.

The MLA also sought continuous supply to over 200 overhead tanks functioning under the Kodiveri Combined Water Supply Scheme and emphasised proper maintenance of the infrastructure. He highlighted the need for regular payment of salaries to tank operators to prevent disruption in water distribution.

In another petition, the MLA said prolonged poor rainfall over the past three decades had led to severe depletion of groundwater sources, resulting in waterbodies at Nichampalayam panchayat drying up. He said the situation had affected both drinking water availability and water for cattle.

He said a temporary borewell had been established near a temple and a one-km pipeline laid to benefit about 500 acres. Funds were allocated under the MLA Local Area Development Fund and a trial run had been completed. He urged the administration to dig additional borewells on patta lands and ensure water supply by refilling waterbodies.
