Yashpal Suvarna, Udupi MLA, on January 6, asked officials of the ports department to redesign the proposed new gate for the Malpe Fishing Harbour to complement the ongoing widening of Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway 169A.

The MLA, who visited the site with officials to inspect the proposed gate and the NH work, said that the 14.4-metre-wide gate approved by the Fisheries and Ports Department is unscientific and will cause problems for vehicles entering the harbour after completion of the highway work.

He suggested redesigning the gate width to 24 metres to complement the four-lane NH and told officials he would request the Fisheries Minister to arrange for the release of additional funds.

Mr. Suvarna asked the Ports and National Highways wing of the Public Works Departments to work in coordination to expand the construction of the minor bridge on the highway connecting the harbour. Gate and bridge work should proceed simultaneously to avoid disrupting fishing activities. He directed the Port Officer to promptly clear the land needed for the highway.

Malpe Fishermen’s Association President Narayana Karkera and others were present.
