Nehru on Wednesday inaugurated a pumping station at Kambarasampettai and several other civic projects in Tiruchi, implemented at a total outlay of ₹74.84 crore. The pumping station has been established on the Cauvery riverbed as part of a new drinking water scheme to serve residents in Tiruverumbur town panchayat, Pappakurichi, Ellakudi, Keezha Kalkandarkottai and Alathur panchayats, which fall under old wards 61, 62, 63, 64, and 65, and were added to Tiruchi Corporation in 2011. The scheme has been executed at an estimated cost of ₹64.95 crore with financial assistance from the German Development Bank, KfW, to ensure a supply of drinking water at the rate of 135 litres per person per day, as per Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation guidelines. Under Phase I of the project, a collector well with a diameter of 6 metres and a depth of 18 metres has been constructed in the Cauvery riverbed. From the pumping station, drinking water at the rate of 27.27 million litres per day is supplied to residents of Wards 38, 39, 40, 41, 42 and 43 through overhead tanks with a combined storage capacity of 38 lakh litres. The overhead tanks are located at Pari Nagar, Pugazh Nagar, Old Ellakudi, Cauvery Nagar, Santhosh Nagar, Alathur, Ganesh Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, besides three existing tanks. To facilitate distribution, 211.711 km of distribution pipelines and 21.556 km of main pumping lines have been laid. Through the scheme, drinking water connections have been provided to 19,343 households, benefiting a population of 88,054. Mr. Nehru also laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new school building at Anna Nagar to relocate the Corporation Middle School currently functioning at Mettu Street. A sum of ₹6.60 crore has been sanctioned under the Corporation’s Education Fund for the construction of a three-storey building on an area of 11,533.63 sq. ft. The ground plus two floor structure will include a headmaster’s room, staff room, 18 classrooms, a playground, sanitary complexes, and drinking water facilities. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months, according to an official press note. Earlier, Mr. Nehru inaugurated multi-purpose office buildings at Vannarapettai, Karumandapam, Edamalaipatti Pudur, Ramachandra Nagar and Woraiyur; crematoriums at Kuzhimikarai and Pirattiyur; bus shelters at Kumaran Nagar, Vinayaga Nagar and Geetha Nagar; a padipagam and a gym at Vamadam; and a toilet facility at Karumandapam. The foundation stone was laid for the construction of overhead tanks at Rajarajan Nagar and State Bank Colony.
