A malfunctioning lift, meant for the exclusive use of staff doctors at Tiruchi’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital’s super-speciality block, is being replaced with a new one at a cost of ₹44 lakh.

The elevator, one of four in the block, had been out of commission for over a year, and had become an eyesore as its broken parts and other debris piled up on the corridor outside.

“We have been able to carry out the new installation with the help of ₹38 lakh from the corpus fund of the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, and ₹6 lakh contributed by the Public Works Department,” S. Kumaravel, dean, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, MGMGH, told The Hindu.

At present, the old lift was being dismantled, and authorities said the new elevator would become functional within a month. The public hospital has also recently renovated the toilets in the building. “Based on the inpatient strength, approximately 8 lakh litres of water is supplied per day to the toilets. Earlier, we were getting only 1.5 lakh litres per day,” Dr. Kumaravel added.
