About 65 people attended a jeweller meet held in Salem recently to discuss the challenges faced by silver article manufacturers and retailers in testing of silver. The event, organised by the Hallmarking Department, BIS New Delhi and BIS Coimbatore branch, included visit to silver jewellery units. G. Bhavani, head, BIS, Coimbatore, spoke about the importance of the silver hallmarking scheme. Chitra Gupta, scientist-G & DDG (Hallmarking), BIS, spoke on the current scenario of silver jewellery manufacturing in the country. A.S. Sriram, former president of the THJC and Udayakumar, silver manufacturer, Salem, spoke in detail regarding the difficulties faced by the silver jewellery manufacturers. The event covered current scenario of silver hallmarking, guidelines on jewellery and registration procedure, assaying methods, recent changes in silver hallmarking including HUID, silver HUID marking, and fine grades and solders grades, a press release from the BIS said.
