The Kolathur police on Thursday arrested a mechanic and detained two minors for their alleged role in a motorcycle theft racket. The police said Jayabharathi, 34, a private school teacher from Anjugam Nagar Third Cross Street in, had parked her two-wheeler outside her house on the night of February 6. She found it missing the next morning and lodged a police complaint, following which a case was registered. During the investigation, a police team arrested Jagadish, 19, of Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district. On questioning, he allegedly confessed to committing the theft along with two juveniles aged 16 and 17. The minors were subsequently secured and questioned. Police said the trio had been stealing motorcycles from different parts of Chennai and hiding them in secluded spots near dumping yards and riverbeds, covering them with rugs and discarded digital banner sheets. Later they transported the vehicles to Tiruvannamalai and neighbouring districts and sold them at low prices.
