The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has proposed a ₹50 crore allocation in its 2026-27 budget to standardise salaries, providing major relief to multi-tasking staff (MTS) workers.

Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh announced the decision at a press conference on Thursday, a day ahead of the civic body’s budget approval in the House. He said the move addresses a long-pending demand for equal pay among MTS workers. “This disparity will now end. We have fulfilled the promise made to MTS employees. During the budget session, Leader of the House Pravesh Wahi will formally announce and seal the decision,” Mr. Singh said.

Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma said MTS employees had approached her multiple times to raise concerns about unequal pay scales across zones. During her budget finalisation speech on January 28, Ms Sharma had addressed the demand of providing a job to a family member in case of the death of an MTS worker, saying that it would be resolved at the earliest. She had then also announced that the employees would be given equal pay.

The workers in six of the 12 zones receive ₹27,000 per month, while those in the remaining zones are paid between ₹17,000 and ₹19,000 in line with minimum wage norms.

The issue had triggered protests in October 2025, when over 5,200 MTS-DBC workers staged demonstrations for more than a month. They demanded equal pay, regularisation of services, medical and earned leave, and compensatory jobs for families of deceased employees.
