MCD Commissioner’s project approval limit increased to ₹50 cr.

The Delhi government has increased the upper limit of projects for the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to ₹50 crore from the existing ₹5 crore, the Chief Minister’sOffice (CMO) said on Saturday.

Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena has approved a file moved by the Delhi government, it added.

“This measure is expected to substantially expedite the decision-making process and ensure the timely completion of works related to essential civic amenities, enabling faster delivery of benefits to the public. The decision reflects the Delhi government’s strong commitment to good governance, and prioritising public convenience,” the CMO stated in a release.

Currently, projects exceeding ₹5 crore require approval from the Standing Committee of the MCD, followed by final clearance from the House of the Corporation. “This multi-tiered approval mechanism often led to avoidable delays in the execution of development works. By increasing the Commissioner’s financial powers to ₹50 crore, the implementation process of schemes will become simpler, faster, and more effective,” it stated.

Boost for local bodies

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that empowering local bodies is a top priority for the government to develop the Capital.

“Timely execution of development works will ensure better utilisation of resources, enhance the effectiveness of public expenditure, and provide much-needed relief to citizens from daily civic inconveniences,” the CM stated in the release.
