The annual ‘Masimagam’ festival of Saivaite and Vaishnavite temples at Kumbakonam will commence during the third week of this month and culminate on March 2. As per the custom and practice, the 10-day annual festival will commence on February 21 at Saivaite temples and on February 22 at Vaishnavite temples. While the car festival of Sri Aadhikumbeswarar temple will be held on February 28, the car festival of Sri Kasiviswanathar, Sri Abimukeswarar, and Sri Gauthameswarar temples will be held on March 1 evening wherein the decorated idols of Lord Siva mounted on the wooden cars will be pulled along the banks of ‘mahamagam’ tank. While the annual festival at Saivaite temples will come to an end on the ‘masimagam’ day (March 2) with ‘theerthavari’ at the ‘mahamagam’ tank around noon, the annual festival at Chakarapani temple will culminate with ‘car festival’ on March 2 morning and of the Sarangapani temple with the float festival at “Potramarai Kulam” on March 2 night. On the ‘masimagam’ day, devotees will be allowed to take holy dip at the ‘mahamagam’ tank from 5 a.m. onwards, according to official sources.
