Two undertrials at Mangaluru Prison have been accused of assaulting Jail Superintendent Sharanabasappa and a few other prison staff members, along with damaging some infrastructure at the jail on Friday, March 13. In the complaint to Barke Police, Mr. Sharanabasappa said undertrial Mohammed Iqbal entered his chamber at 8 p.m. on Friday and abused him for sending new undetrials to the cell. He assaulted Mr. Sharabasappa and a few other prison staff members, who tried to intervene. Another undertrial, Mohammed Afrid, joined the brawl and hurled plastic chairs at Mr. Sharabasappa and the staff members. While returning to their cell, the two damaged the water filter machine and the attached pipe.
