The Plastic Park project at Ganjimutt on the outskirts of Mangaluru is likely to be inaugurated before this monsoon, according to Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta.

Speaking at ‘MIR NetZero Vision 2047 Summit’ organised by Italy’s MIR Group here on Friday, Capt. Chowta said that 90 % of the project is complete now.

“I have already spoken to the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers J. P. Nadda to give a date for its inauguration. Hopefully, we will be able to inaugurate it before monsoon,” the MP said.

According to Gokuldas Nayak, Joint Director, District Industries Centre, Mangaluru the park is spread over 104 acres. It has 50 sites developed on 60 acres.

The government had approved the park in January, 2022. Of the ₹62.77 crore project cost, the Union government’s approved share stood at ₹31.38 crore.

Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, told the Rajya Sabha on July 29, 2025 that on completion, the project is expected to generate direct employment opportunities for about 4,000 people and indirect employment for about 12,000.

Ms. Patel said the park is expected to benefit the project area through promotion of entrepreneurship and growth in plastics and related industries. Employment opportunities would also be created for the local residents, she said.

The development activities at the project area were being carried out in accordance with permissions from the State Pollution Control Board. The provision of facilities such as drainage system, water supply, and sewage treatment plant would ensure environmental sustainability, she said.

Surathkal – B. C. Road Bypass Road

Speaking at the MIR NetZero Vision 2047 Summit, Capt. Chowta said that the Union government has sanctioned a by-pass road from Surathkal to B. C. Road. A detailed project report (DPR) of the proposed project is underway. The project has been proposed to de-congest the city.

Elevated highway

The MP said that a proposal to construct an elevated highway from Nanthoor Junction to Kuluru on the NH 66 and between Panambur to Baikampady has been mooted. “This project will also be included in the DPR of by-pass road from Surathkal to B. C. Road,” Capt. Chowta said.

He said all efforts will be made to get an integrated medical tourism facility for Mangaluru, a proposal mooted in the Union Budget for 2026-27.

The MP said Mangaluru has all potential to become the city economic region, where an investment of ₹ 1,000 crore for the next five years can be made.
