The police on Tuesday arrested a Kerala native on charge of disrupting traffic, causing public nuisance and preventing police personnel from discharging their job on arterial Avinashi Road late on Monday, January 5, 2026.

J. Antony (35) of Thrissur district in Kerala, who has been residing in Salem, was arrested after videos of the man standing and sitting on top of his car parked on the wrong side of Avinashi Road, in front of a private college, went viral on social media.

As per a release issued by the Coimbatore City Police, the incident took place around 10.30 p.m. on Monday. It said that the man caused fear among the public and attempted to injure them with his vehicle, besides threatening them.

After being alerted about the incident, the Peelamedu police rushed to the spot and asked the man, who was standing on top of his car, to get down. The man verbally abused the policemen and refused to get down. He also assaulted the policemen. As a result, members of the public broke the windscreens and windows of his car with stones and beat him up, said the release.

The police rescued the man, who suffered minor injuries, and admitted him to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

According to the police, Antony’s wife had lodged a complaint against him at the All Women Police Station, Karumathampatty, for dowry harassment and torture.

The Peelamedu police registered a case against him on Tuesday for offences such as criminal intimidation, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, wrongful restraint, public nuisance and rash driving, based on which he was arrested.
