JOTHI RAMALINGAM Civic agencies such as the Greater Chennai Corporation have completed 1,123 works of various civic infrastructure projects under Singara Chennai 2.0 in the city, said Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu. Singara Chennai 2.0 was initiated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin after the DMK came to power in 2021. Presenting the interim budget 2026-2027 on Tuesday, Mr. Thennarasu said: “Under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative, 1,227 works have been taken up at an estimated cost of ₹2,491 crore, of which 1,123 works have been completed.” Work on some of the Singara Chennai 2.0 projects is under way. According to Corporation officials, iconic projects such as the heritage restoration of Victoria Public Hall were completed utilising these funds. Modern pet clinics and animal birth control centres in areas such as Lloyds Colony, Kannammapet, and Pulianthope have already been completed utilising funds. Streets have also received a makeover under the programme in the city. Pointing to the State government’s objective of ensuring balanced and equitable development across all regions of Chennai, Mr. Thennarasu said: “The government’s flagship initiative, Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam, is being implemented effectively. Under this scheme, various works such as construction of bus terminals, provision of housing facilities, drinking water supply, educational and healthcare infrastructure works, development works of lakes and ponds, beach and coastal area development, construction of fish markets, gymnasiums, parks and sports infrastructure facilities, construction of electric crematoria, upgradation of substations and power transformers, establishment of polytechnic colleges, and provision of skill development training programmes have been undertaken at an estimated cost of ₹6,045 crore.” Flood mitigation In Chennai and surrounding areas, flood mitigation works, including the improvement of storm water drains, have been carried out at ₹1,618 crore. Permanent flood protection works have been undertaken at ₹362 crore, he said.
