Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja directed the K.R. Puram Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) officials to reverify the list of women who had undergone abortion in the tribal villages in Eluru district.

Ms. Sailaja, along with District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr. Amrutha, Women Development and Child Welfare Project Director Sarada, and other officials conducted an inquiry into the 281 abortions registered in the ITDA limits in Eluru district on Tuesday.

“The doctors and the field staff explained different reasons for the abortions. A detailed inquiry has been ordered,” the Mahila Commission Chairperson said.

“The Women’s Commission inquired with the Deputy DM&HO Dr. Suresh Kumar and the medical officers on the reasons for the huge number of abortions registered in the tribal habitations. I asked the field staff to revisit the houses and verify the data of all 281 abortions again,” Ms. Sailaja told The Hindu.

The Chairperson inspected the Nandapuram Primary Health Centre (PHC), verified the medical records, and interacted with the doctors and the paramedical staff.  “Instructions have been given to ITDA Project Officer Ramulu Naik to submit a report to the Commission after re-verification of the abortions date case-wise,” Ms. Sailaja said.
