Tushar Gandhi, the great grand son of Mahatma Gandhi, expressed his displeasure over the Telangana Government’s Gandhi Sarovar project as part of Musi Riverfront Development and urged the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to reconsider it given the displacement of people.

While not directly commenting on the project envisaging the world’s tallest Gandhi statue at the confluence of Musi with Esi river, Mr. Tushar Gandhi spoke in opposition of the displacement it would cause.

“Not in my name. Stop it!”

Posting on his account of social media platform X, he said displacing residents to create space for Gandhi statue is the most ‘unGandhian’ action. Appealing the Chief Minister not to do it, he posted stating Bapu would have said “Not in my Name, Stop it!”.

Mr. Tushar Gandhi is the son of Arun Gandhi — who is Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson and son of Manilal Gandhi.

Land acquisition attempts by the government have drawn a lot of flak, especially for the Gandhi Sarovar project, as it is set to displace an apartment complex in the buffer zone of Musi. The structure was built with all permissions, before the 50-metre buffer was made the norm, residents claim.

The authorities, however, are determined to go ahead with the project, by acquiring the properties through the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
