Mangalore University emerged the overall runners up at the 85th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship 2025–26 hosted by Alva’s Education Foundation and organised by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences that concluded on Friday, January 16, at Moodbidri. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT The event, organised by Alva’s Education Foundation and hosted by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) concluded on Friday, January 16 at Moodbidri. The top three positions in the men’s section were bagged by Madras University (74 points), Mangalore University (60) and Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak (29). In the women’s section, Chandigarh University (67), Madras University (47) and Mangalore University (38) finished first, second and third respectively. The Best Athlete Awards were won by Pooja of Lovely Professional University (High Jump) in the women’s category and by Mohan Raj of University of Madras, Chennai (Triple Jump) and Vihvendra Singh of Punjab RIMT University (20 km Walk) in the men’s category. Valedictory Ceremony Giving away the prizes at the valedictory ceremony on Friday, Moodbidri MLA Umanath A Kotian said Alva’s team, under the leadership of M. Mohan Alva, is capable of organising sports events even at international levels. The successful conduct of the All India Championship should pave the way for more such events to be organised in Moodbidri. Competition Observer U. V. Shankar congratulated the Alva’s team for the successful organisation of the championship, stating that it was a major achievement of both Alva’s and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. He further said that the Athletics Federation of India expresses its gratitude to Dr. Mohan Alva not only for this championship, but also for his overall contribution toward promoting sports. Calling it the best athletics meet he had witnessed, he noted that many athletes come from economically weaker backgrounds and that the cash prizes announced by Alva’s would be a significant support to them. Former minister Abhayachandra Jain, Foundation Managing Trustee Vivek Alva and others were present. Meet records The Championship saw five meet records being set by athletes to whom the Foundation gave away ₹25,000 cash prize. They are, Mangalore University Team in 4*400 m run; Sam Vasanth of Coimbatore Bharatiyar University in 100 m run, Kuldip Yadav from ITM University, Gwalior in Pole-vault, Pooja from Lovely Professional University in high jump and Tanya Chaudhary from Chandigarh University in hammer throw.
